Pedro Alves AKA pmalves and Kaapa, of Webdetails.pt and CDF fame, presented Community Data Access (CDA). CDA allows you to access any of the various Pentaho data sources without worrying about the details. It can be used as a standalone plugin on the Pentaho BI server and output the result in several formats or it can be used in combination with the Dashboard Editor and the Community Dashboard framework (CDF).
It basically covers any source that you can use within PRD (Pentaho Report Designer). Additionally it has a security layer that prevents code injection, a caching layer, unions, joins (full outer join), column selection, formula additon and column renaming. Following output formats are available: JSON, XML, CSV and XSL.
Simple url calls that support the following datasources: SQL, MDX, Metadata, Kettle, etc. And supports multiple outputs: JSON, XML, CSV, XLS, HTML visual mode.
CDA also gives you the ability to join different data sources like SQL query with a Mondrian query and use it for a single report is available.

I've had some problems with the WebEx playback applet on a 64-bit Mac running Snow Leopard. If you don't see the video, fast forward to the end of the presentation and rewind, at least 3/4 of the presentation must be downloaded for this to work. Also, if the audio starts to drop out, jumping back and forth on the time line seems to fix it. Let me know if you have problems.
