In the case where the inbox doesn't have any e-mails matching our set conditions, is it possible to add a failure to this step similar to other job steps?

Note, POP3 is fundamentally less functional that IMAP protocol and fetch all emails only from inbox folder. That means it will not have functionality to retrieve unread only emails, read received date, etc. PLEASE, keep it in mind when choose between POP3 and IMAP, they are not equivalents.
