  • 01. Getting the Pentaho BI Platform

The Pentaho BI Platform is available in many formats; select the format that is best suited for your environment. The content of this document is limited to the pre-configured installation distributions. See Manual Deployment of Pentaho for information and instructions for a manual download and installation of the Pentaho BI Platform.

You can obtain the BI Platform for free from the Pentaho Web site. Just fill out the form and click Get Free Downloads. This download includes a pre-configured JBoss application server with sample data and solutions.

The Pentaho BI Platform is built and tested against the Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.5 (J2SE 5.0), and may not work properly with other versions or from Java VM vendors or projects other than Sun. You can download the JRE 1.5 from java.sun.com. You also need to set the JAVA_HOME environment variable, which indicates where the JRE is installed.

Umm... Macs don't use rpm files. There are currently only .zip and .tar.gz demo downloads available.

This page appears to be out of date.  I click the link to go to Sourceforge but there is no Files link there for me.  So I click the big green Download Pentaho - BI button.

Next problem, there is no pentaho_demo-x.x.x.x.  There is one for hsqldb and one for mysql.  I have no idea which one to grab at first so I'm grabbing both.

The *.bin file does not work at all on the mac.  I was able to run it successfully from within a Linux VM on the mac, so I know the download itself is good:

    mac:~/downloaded mwlang$ chmod a+x pentaho-1.8-linux-opensource-installer.bin
    mac:~/downloaded mwlang$ ./pentaho-1.8-linux-opensource-installer.bin
-bash: ./pentaho-1.8-linux-opensource-installer.bin: cannot execute binary file

Using the pentaho demo preconfigured installation of the BI platform (and also 1.6?) seems to be missing the SQL Server tab in the metadata editor setup. I had to do the manual installation of 1.7 to get this working. Apparently, even the latest BI PCI was using an older (1.6) version of the metadata editor.

On Ubuntu Hardy, pentaho-1.6.0GA-linux-opensource-installer.bin just exists and nothing seems to happen.  strace shows the program starts running but then detaches, so strace loses track of what is happening.

Preceding was supposed to read that the installer "just exits and nothing seems to happen."

Also, this installer is not listed in Pentaho's list of downloads on their site.  But running one of those PreConfigured Installations reveals an unmentioned requirement for port 8080, which is already in use by another application.  I'm now looking for the configuration file which mentions port 8080.

    Hallo,

please try to give the bin file the rights 755 (chmod 755 pentaho...) and start it with ./pentaho...
