The principles of open source and the Agile principles behind the Scrum methodology are very similar to the way Pentaho behaves in it' natural state. Developers, QA, Product Management and the documentation teams all collaborate on a daily basis. Forming Sprint teams was a natural extension of the way we have been working since the company began in 2004.
The Scrum methodology can be adapted to include community participation, increased transparency, and feature hardening and acceptance. Usage of a well-defined and documented methodology is beneficial to open source projects.
Open Scrum is a lightweight, flexible methodology that is suitable for open source and commercial open source software development projects. It increases visibility into the actions of the core development team and increases the potential for community involvement without introducing arduous project management.
